The Importance of Managing Your Credit

A bad credit crediting or bad credit history can negatively affect you in several ways. You may be denied a loan or more commonly given a loan with a high interest rate. Financial institutions use risk-based pricing meaning that you will be charged more to borrow money if there is a large risk of you defaulting on your payment obligations.

Poor credit can also affect employment. Many employers especially large corporations are now checking the credit history of job applicants. This is a very controversial but legal background investigation. Negative information on your credit report may get you passed over for a new job.

It's a good idea to check your credit report once per year. Thanks to the Fair Credit Reporting Act consumers are now entitled to a free credit report each year. However, keep in mind that the free credit report will not disclose your credit score. The credit score is derived from proprietary scoring models and thus isn't given away for free. At www.myFico.com you can order a combined report AND score from all three major credit reporting agencies at once.
